The Traders Spread

Brent Crude

A tanker loads at a North Sea terminal inside a dated window three weeks ahead. A trader in London who has never seen the terminal sells that cargo, and the price the two agree becomes one input into a published assessment. That assessment is Brent. Not a chart and not a ticker: a small number of physical cargoes whose prices are collected, filtered and printed, and against which most of the crude traded internationally is ultimately priced.
