AbbVie (ABBV) vs the profit jump: shares rise 1.41%

AbbVie (ABBV) shares rose 1.41% to $294.89 after adjusted EPS of $3.82 more than doubled, shaped by a much smaller acquired-research charge than a year earlier.

AbbVie more than doubled adjusted profit, to $3.82 a share, and ABBV still closed the session only 1.41% higher. The year-ago quarter is what makes those two figures sit together.

The Exhibit 99.1 attached to AbbVie's Form 8-K, filed 30 October 2026, puts GAAP diluted earnings at $2.37 against $0.10 a year earlier, and adjusted diluted earnings at $3.82 against $1.86. The release calls both an increase of over 100 percent. Acquired in-process research and milestones cost $216 million this quarter, equal to 11 cents a share. A year earlier that line was $2.680 billion and a $1.50 hit. Most of the percentage jump in profit is the gap between those two charges. Revenue rose 10.3 percent, from $15.776 billion to $17.404 billion.

Robert A. Michael, chairman and chief executive of AbbVie, said the company "continues to deliver outstanding results, reflecting solid execution across our diverse portfolio," and cited "completing the acquisition of Apogee Therapeutics" in the same remarks. The cash session still priced a small revision.

ABBV closed at $294.89, up $4.10 from $290.79, on volume of 6,897,967, in the StockAnalysis quote timed 4:00 pm EDT on 30 October 2026 and retrieved at 07:59 UTC on 1 November 2026. The session high of $298.74 matched the 52-week high, and the stock gave back $3.85 into the close.

AbbVie's account posted the results link at 11:59 GMT, before the New York open.

A research charge can do the heavy lifting inside a doubled profit even when sales growth is ordinary. A note on Eli Lilly follows that pattern on another large drug franchise.

Skyrizi carried the sales gain

Immunology brought in $9.165 billion, up 16.3 percent, a bit over half of company revenue. Skyrizi was $5.776 billion, up 22.7 percent, Rinvoq $2.706 billion, up 23.9 percent, and Humira $683 million, down 31.2 percent. Jeffrey Stewart, executive vice president and chief commercial officer of AbbVie, said Skyrizi "continues to capture half of the new patient starts in the class" in inflammatory bowel disease, according to Motley Fool's report of the call. The 8-K records FDA approval of that induction option, backed by the Phase 3 AFFIRM study.

Neuroscience revenue was $3.389 billion, up 19.4 percent. Oncology rose 0.8 percent to $1.696 billion as Imbruvica fell 26.1 percent to $522 million, and aesthetics slipped 1.4 percent to $1.176 billion.

Three cents on the ceiling

Full-year adjusted diluted earnings guidance moved from $13.76 to $13.96 into a band of $13.95 to $13.99. The floor rose 19 cents and the ceiling rose 3 cents. The new floor sits one cent under the old ceiling. A 69-cent drag from acquired research booked through the third quarter sits inside that range, and later charges stay outside it. The quarterly dividend goes from $1.73 to $1.82, about 5.2 percent, payable on 16 February 2027 to holders of record on 15 January 2027.

A clinical headline can reprice a large drugmaker by more than a guide that adds three cents at the top. Amgen's Sjögren's session was that kind of day. AbbVie's Friday tagged a high and handed part of it back.

What would change this reading

The modest gain fits a base-effect reading of the profit jump, and a narrowing of the guide toward the old ceiling. That reading weakens if later adjusted earnings grow nearer the pace of sales, with an ordinary year-ago research charge in place of the $1.50 hit. It also weakens if Skyrizi stops covering Humira's decline, or if a fourth-quarter research charge pressures the $13.95 floor and makes the fade from $298.74 look early.
