The Friday move in American Express was not a cut to the profit outlook. The company raised full-year earnings guidance on the morning of 23 October 2026, reported record third-quarter revenue in the same release, and the shares still finished at a Nasdaq last sale of $313.22. That print sat $11.95 under the prior close of $325.17, a decline of 3.67%.

A red close invites a demand story. The filings point at the cost of keeping the franchise expensive to belong to. Revenue net of interest expense was $20.1 billion, up 9%, and billed business was $454.0 billion, up 8%, a pace management called in line with recent quarters. Goods and services, more than 70% of the book, grew 7% after two small-business cobrand exits, while travel and entertainment grew 10%, so the session priced the bill for spending that was still expanding.

GAAP earnings per share were $5.42, against $4.14 a year earlier, including a $982 million pretax gain, $751 million after tax, from the sale of the stake in Global Business Travel Group. Part of that gain funded efficiency initiatives. The restructuring charge was $336 million pretax and $0.37 a share after tax. Adjusted earnings, with the gain and the charge removed, were $4.68, up 13%. Chairman and chief executive Stephen Squeri said in the 23 October 2026 earnings release: "Given our performance year-to-date, we are raising our full-year EPS guidance to between $18.30 and $18.60 ($17.60-$17.90 adjusted), and we're on track to deliver another year of 10 percent revenue growth."

Consolidated expenses were $14.5 billion, up 9%. Variable customer engagement costs rose with spending, benefit usage and the prior-year U.S. Platinum refresh, and management expects that line to moderate next quarter once the refresh sits in both periods. Marketing expense rose 11% while operating expense grew only modestly once the travel-stake gain, higher legal reserves and the restructuring charge are set aside. Provisions for credit losses were $1.0 billion, against $1.3 billion a year earlier, and the principal net write-off rate was 1.8%, down from 1.9%.

The Form 8-K was accepted at 07:00:36, ahead of the cash open. Nasdaq's row shows an open of $315.00, a high of $321.20, a low of $311.40 and a close of $313.22 on 4,124,230 shares, so the stock traded above $320 and still settled near the day's low. Jabil recorded a beat and a lower close in a different industry, and a stocks piece on JPMorgan asks the longer question about a money-center bank.

Where the efficiency charge sits

The earnings release and the Form 10-Q price the plan at $336 million pretax and describe efficiency initiatives. A headcount, a timetable and a savings target are absent from both documents. Revenue came from card-member spending, net interest on growing balances, and card fees. Average diluted shares fell 3% to 674 million, and the company returned $2.2 billion to shareholders in the quarter. The close weighed a higher profit guide against expenses that rose almost as fast as sales.

What to watch

The open question is which line moves first. If engagement costs moderate once the Platinum refresh is in both periods, and billed business stays near 8%, the expense rate can cool with Friday's revenue guide left in place. If goods and services cool further from 7% while travel stays strong, the mix inside that 8% changes even when the headline rate holds. The adjusted band of $17.60 to $17.90 is a full-year range, and $313.22 is one session.
