Bitcoin Cash (BCH) fell 6.05 percent in the large-cap tape

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) fell 6.05 percent to $279.11, further than Bitcoin's 1.10 percent slip, after a same-day spike to $304.28 unwound on the Fed's rate hold.

Why did Bitcoin Cash fall 6.05 percent, to $279.11, when Bitcoin fell only 1.10 percent, to $79,888? The gap is a spike Bitcoin failed to match. From 08:00 UTC on 27 October to 10:00 UTC on 28 October, CoinGecko's hourly file took Bitcoin Cash from $281.77 to $303.95, up 7.9 percent, while Bitcoin went from $79,706 to $81,445, up 2.2 percent. The bitcoin cash price on a 24-hour screen is pricing the giveback.

The coins endpoint, read at 07:01:52 UTC on 29 October, put the live print at $279.11, an unrounded change of minus 6.04774 percent, a high of $304.28 and a low of $275.32. Market cap was $5.61 billion against Bitcoin's $1.61 trillion at 07:02:29 UTC, when Bitcoin was $79,888 and down 1.103 percent.

Forty-eight hours, stamp by stamp

At 18:00 UTC, when the Federal Reserve statement came out, Bitcoin Cash was already $285.36, down 6.1 percent from the 10:00 high, and Bitcoin was $80,808, down 0.8 percent from $81,445. Sahil Mahadik, a market analyst at NameCoinNews, had described a push through $304.8 in a note dated 28 October, while the hourly file times that high at 10:00 UTC, 6:00 a.m. in New York, ahead of the vote.

The hourly low was $277.14 at 04:00 UTC on 29 October, 8.8 percent under the high, against a 2.1 percent fall in Bitcoin to $79,762. The 07:01 hourly point was $278.96. Seven-day change was still plus 0.42 percent, and the 30-day change was minus 10.17 percent.

A hold, and a futures book

The Committee voted 10 to 2 to maintain the federal funds target range at 3.75 to 4 percent. Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack preferred a quarter-point increase. The statement said inflation remains elevated. Kevin Warsh, chairman of the Federal Reserve, said in the opening statement that inflation had been above the 2 percent goal for close to six years, and that he was unwilling to call financial conditions tight. Bitcoin's 2.1 percent giveback fits a hold. The fork's 8.8 percent giveback needs the morning spike beside it.

CoinGlass, on its Bitcoin Cash page, showed open interest of $309,964,347, futures volume of $436,804,263 and spot volume of $42,799,247. The futures book was about 10.2 times spot, and liquidations of $1,509,067 were 0.49 percent of open interest, too thin a share to carry the range. That lag, a smaller coin behind Bitcoin, is already on this desk in the Initia fall, including the week Stellar trailed Bitcoin.

What to watch

Compare the next CoinGecko daily stamp with two prints that already exist, the low of $275.32 and the high of $304.28. A stamp back through the high would mean the giveback failed, and a stamp under the low would extend a 30-day run that is already minus 10.17 percent. If Bitcoin's 24-hour change stays near 1 percent while the fork's gap closes, the spike was the whole story.

The other check is the derivatives tape, where $1.51 million of liquidations against about $310 million of open interest is quiet beside a loud range. A later share several times larger would mean positions are being forced out.
